Global Learning
Another well-known psychomotor training concept is the transfer of learning from one skill or practice to another. Learning can transfer positively or negatively. Positive transfer of learning can make training sessions more efficient and learning faster. Negative transfer can actually interfere with the learning of a new element.
Don’t Practice Two Closely Related Skills at the Same Time
How does this work? Let’s say you are working on front handspring step-outs as written in the compulsories (with the leg split throughout) and then try to learn the technically correct optional front handspring (with feet together, block and step-out). It will be much harder to learn to get your feet together in the handspring after practicing feet apart for so long. This is negative transfer. To minimize the problem, you should not practice the two skill techniques at the same time. Separate their practice as much as possible.
Plan Positive Transfer
We want to take advantage of positive transfer. Positive transfer speeds up and makes learning more efficient.
Apply Learning Globally to Speed Learning
Gymnasts and coaches always need to be alert to the similarities in skills and skill groups so the learning gains on one may be directly applied to others speeding the learning process. This process of grouping together training/learning concepts is called global learning.
Global Learning Shortcuts Essential to Dealing with Time Crunch
Gymnastics and tumbling are complicated sports to learn simply because of the sheer number of skills to be learned and the almost infinite number of possible skill combinations. With such a large quantity of skills to be learned and steps of progression to be followed, every useful and safe learning shortcut needs to be considered.
Keep It Simple Stupid
Global learning has many similarities to the KISS concept. Skills should be learned and performed in the simplest and most basic way. Anything that complicates the learning process should be evaluated carefully.
Global Learning Cuts Down on Steps to Learn
This process of simplifying the learning process makes mastering the sport much more manageable by providing basic learning strategies and methods that cover entire groups of skills.
Full and 1 & 1/2 Turns
The family of toe turning skills starts with 1/2 turns and then full turns and progresses to triple turns and better. The basic techniques and the full turn memory position transfer from one skill to the next. Proper basics are required to successfully complete the more advanced turns.
Learn One Turning Technique for Both
It would seem obvious that a single turning technique (arms pulled up style) would apply from 1/2 turns to triple turns. Learn one turning technique and use it for all subsequent turning skills.
Global Learning Requires One Technique
But it may not be as obvious as we think. We have seen a number of coaches using at least two different arm turn initiation techniques for full turns and a different technique on beam and floor.
Why Have to Learn a New Technique for Each New Skill
Even worse, we have heard of a “new technique†for any skill that actually advocates a different technique for every step of the progression. This would seem to be the height of arrogance and ignorance. Where is the advantage in having to re-teach technique at every step of progression (or in this case, regression)?
Sport Skill Training Needs to Be Very Specific to Apply Globally
One of the scientific laws of sports coaching is that for previous learning to be applicable to later learning, training must be specific, very specific. This multiple technique violates that concept in the worst possible way and cannot be recommended in any way.
Don’t Limit Gymnasts by Choosing the Wrong Technique
It is obvious that we need to pick one of the five or so techniques and use it as globally as possible. Consider the highest level of each skill progression when you consider which technique to choose and use. When you coach at the highest levels however, you need to consider what technique can be used not only with single skills, but doubles or triples or whatever the ultimate level of the progression is. This limits the choice considerably and in actuality will leave only one universal technique that can logically be used.
One Technique Saves Learning Time
The benefit to the use of a universal technique comes in the time saved not having to learn a new technique for future skills in the progression. Or to put it another way, once you learn the correct technique for one skill, you have learned the technique to use on all the skills in the progression.
Global Learning Makes a Big Difference
This is just one of the skill groups where global learning applies. With at least, say 8-10 skill groups per event, some of which have more than one applicable global learning method, the learning savings numbers in the hundreds of steps of progression. This makes it critical to look for every opportunity to apply global learning.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why do you use e-Books, instead of regular printed books?
Gymnastics is an evolving sport with frequent rule changes. The electronic book and digital formats allow for us to easily and quickly update the books to reflect new rules and practices. It allows us to keep our information current and up-to-date. It also allows us to deliver the books over the Internet instantly with no additional shipping and handling charges. All of this also frees up our time to create more new products and add more information to our current products.
Are these e-Books, digital products and the information current?
We track any and all changed to USA Gymnastics and F.I.G. rules and polices on a monthly basis and make any necessary changes and updates to the applicable books and products. So our books and products are always up-to-date and are based on the latest information available from the FIG and USAG.
Who are the books written for – gymnasts, coaches, or parents?
All of our books are written with all three groups in mind. Currently, we have just one version for most of our books. Some books include a junior version that is shorter and uses language geared toward elementary school age gymnasts. Eventually, most of our e-Books will have three versions – the current version, the special version for young gymnasts, and a more detailed version for coaches.
What format are your e-Books in?
Our e-Books and most bonus materials are in Adobe Acrobat .pdf format with some bonuses still in .xls Excel spreadsheet format. We use .xls spreadsheets for bonuses that do calculations and data analysis for you such as meet score trackers.
Can your e-Books be printed out?
Yes. E-Books can be read on a computer or printed out and read as a normal book would be. The book is laid out for 8 & 1/2″ x 11″ standard printing paper. Many of the bonuses (like the Workout Sheets and Checklist) are separate and can be printed and taken to the gym (to be used for things like tracking gymnastics work-outs ) or to a meet (perhaps to be used for tracking meet performance).
What payment methods do you accept?
We exclusively use PayPal for our payment systems. PayPal accepts all major credit cards (MasterCard, Visa, Discover, American Express) and electronic checks and provides state of the art security for all transactions.
What are the ages of gymnasts that can understand the e-Books?
Our regular books are written with language targeted for junior high, high school and adult readers. Our Youth versions of e-Books are written for ages 6-12.
Is your information the same as is in USA Gymnastics’s materials?
No, we cover all of the topics and same information in USA Gymnastics materials with the addition of coaching and learning strategies, hints and tips and the perspective of high level coaches about your gymnast’s level. USA Gymnastics has copyrighted the text and videos of the USA Compulsories. Our e-Books provide all of the learning and coaching strategies necessary to become successful in the US gymnastics system.
How does your automatic download system work?
Immediately after your purchase through PayPal, our automatic download system will send you an email with download information and links. You have a limited but generous amount of time to download all of the information.
What if I have download problems?
If for any reason, the automatic download system doesn’t function or you don’t receive your download email, if you were unable to download in a reasonable time or there is any issue with the condition of the e-Books you received, please don’t hesitate to contact us. If there are any problems at all, we want to solve them for you.
