You Have a One-Track Mind
Gymnastics and tumbling, in particular, is a series of learned habits. The human brain is only capable of thinking about one thing at a time. You might be able to think about a number of things in quick succession, but your conscious mind can still only focus on one thing at a time.
Build Tumbling One Good Habit at a Time
When gymnasts are first learning skills like a round-off, it takes all their concentration to do or learn to do that skill correctly. At some point, the execution of the round-off becomes a habit. Hopefully it is a good round-off and a good habit.
Build a Habit on the First Skill so You Can Focus on the Next Skill
At that point, the gymnast is able to concentrate on the next step – learning a back handspring out of the round-off. They will be doing the round-off out of habit and focusing on the back handspring.
Tumbling Series Become Habits
Again, at some point the round-off, back handspring is done out of habit and the gymnast’s mind and concentration are freed to concentrate on the learning of a back somersault.
Habits Built to Highest Levels
The process continues throughout the higher levels of tumbling. For just one example, gymnasts who wish to learn twisting correctly must have a correct layout somersault as a habit before they will be able to focus on the twist.
Good Habits are Extremely Important to Long Term Success
Coaches and gymnasts need to be very aware of this process. They need to understand the importance of learning these basics skills properly the first time because otherwise, they will become bad habits that are very hard or impossible to break.
No Long-Term Advantage to Rushing Learning
Gymnasts and coaches also need to understand that this is why we are not in any hurry to rush progressions. Jumping to the next skill before the previous skill is embedded as a habit will mean the gymnast has no chance to concentrate correctly on the new skill. They won’t be able to focus on the new skill because they still have to concentrate on the old skill and that most likely will result in their learning of the new skill to be incorrect.
The More You Rush Learning, the Less That Sticks
When coaches jump two skills ahead before gymnasts develop the skills as good habits, nothing good can come out of this process.
Bad Habits Means There Are harder Skills You Can’t Learn
Poor habits will limit the upper level of tumbling and gymnastics skills gymnasts will be able to learn. A bad round-off back handspring will limit the power which a gymnast will be able to generate limiting their upper level tumbling development.
Only Fools Rush In
This is a critical coaching error and should be avoided at all costs. Any illusion of temporary improvement will be more than offset by future problems. Often it is the gymnast who is anxious to push ahead to the next progression and want to do things like a series of back handsprings before they can do even one correctly.
Many Male Gymnasts Have Bad Round-Offs From Hurried Progressions
It is amazing the number of male gymnasts we have seen with atrocious round-offs doing saltos on the basis of sheer strength. While they may be able to muscle out a certain number of tumbling skills, they are still limiting their upper tumbling level limit.
Back Up in the Progression If You Want to Fix Lead-In Skills
It is also definitely a poor and potentially dangerous coaching technique to ask for a correction a lead in skill while still asking the gymnast to be working on new final skill in the series. For example, telling a gymnast to get their chest up on their round-off because they are ‘floating’ their back handspring while they are doing double backs can endanger their safety.
If they should happen to change their focus to the round-off (and they most likely won’t and shouldn’t), they may well not be able to re-focus on the double and risk crashing. If you wish to fix their round-off, back up in the progression and fix it without the worry of the double back (hopefully, their round-off has already been fixed by the time they are doing doubles).
Tumbling and Gymnastics Are Habit upon Habit
Gymnastics and tumbling are a series of habits which coaches and gymnasts should be working hard at building correctly so they can build on that strong base and reach the highest levels of the sport.
Bonus #1: Tumbling Element Count Chart
This is a chart for coaches and gymnasts to track and compare how many tumbling skills that they do in the various training stages during a competition year. Element counting is a method of measuring and tracking tumbling skill training volume – the number of tumbling skills a gymnast does during a particular period of time.
Bonus #2: Daily Tumbling Log
The one-page daily workout log is a unique combination of a gymnastics diary; event, injury and goal tracking and a psychological evaluation of what happened at practice. It is designed so it can be quickly and easily filled out by gymnasts on a daily basis, either for their personal use or to share with their coach.
Bonus #3: Tumbling Records
This simple Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet Program allows tumblers to enter their meet scores and see what their gymnastics meet performance looks like for the year.
Bonus #4: Back Tumbling Progressions

Frequently Asked Questions
Why do you use e-Books, instead of regular printed books?
Gymnastics is an evolving sport with frequent rule changes. The electronic book and digital formats allow for us to easily and quickly update the books to reflect new rules and practices. It allows us to keep our information current and up-to-date. It also allows us to deliver the books over the Internet instantly with no additional shipping and handling charges. All of this also frees up our time to create more new products and add more information to our current products.
Are these e-Books, digital products and the information current?
We track any and all changed to USA Gymnastics and F.I.G. rules and polices on a monthly basis and make any necessary changes and updates to the applicable books and products. So our books and products are always up-to-date and are based on the latest information available from the FIG and USAG.
Who are the books written for – gymnasts, coaches, or parents?
All of our books are written with all three groups in mind. Currently, we have just one version for most of our books. Some books include a junior version that is shorter and uses language geared toward elementary school age gymnasts. Eventually, most of our e-Books will have three versions – the current version, the special version for young gymnasts, and a more detailed version for coaches.
What format are your e-Books in?
Our e-Books and most bonus materials are in Adobe Acrobat .pdf format with some bonuses still in .xls Excel spreadsheet format. We use .xls spreadsheets for bonuses that do calculations and data analysis for you such as meet score trackers.
Can your e-Books be printed out?
Yes. E-Books can be read on a computer or printed out and read as a normal book would be. The book is laid out for 8 & 1/2″ x 11″ standard printing paper. Many of the bonuses (like the Workout Sheets and Checklist) are separate and can be printed and taken to the gym (to be used for things like tracking gymnastics work-outs ) or to a meet (perhaps to be used for tracking meet performance).
What payment methods do you accept?
We exclusively use PayPal for our payment systems. PayPal accepts all major credit cards (MasterCard, Visa, Discover, American Express) and electronic checks and provides state of the art security for all transactions.
What are the ages of gymnasts that can understand the e-Books?
Our regular books are written with language targeted for junior high, high school and adult readers. Our Youth versions of e-Books are written for ages 6-12.
Is your information the same as is in USA Gymnastics’s materials?
No, we cover all of the topics and same information in USA Gymnastics materials with the addition of coaching and learning strategies, hints and tips and the perspective of high level coaches about your gymnast’s level. USA Gymnastics has copyrighted the text and videos of the USA Compulsories. Our e-Books provide all of the learning and coaching strategies necessary to become successful in the US gymnastics system.
How does your automatic download system work?
Immediately after your purchase through PayPal, our automatic download system will send you an email with download information and links. You have a limited but generous amount of time to download all of the information.
What if I have download problems?
If for any reason, the automatic download system doesn’t function or you don’t receive your download email, if you were unable to download in a reasonable time or there is any issue with the condition of the e-Books you received, please don’t hesitate to contact us. If there are any problems at all, we want to solve them for you.
