“Nadia” – The Movie

Nadia Comaneci is one of the best-known gymnasts in the world. Nadia was the first female gymnast ever to be awarded a perfect score of 10 in an Olympic gymnastic event, when she received 7 perfect 10′s at the 1976 Montreal Olympics. She is a Romanian gymnast, won three Olympic gold medals at those 1976 Summer Olympics and was also the winner of two gold medals at the 1980 Summer Olympics.

Nadia, Bela and Marta

This movie is the story about Nadia, from the time she was discovered by Belya Karolyi, and had just begun her gymnastics career to the Montreal Olympics where she received 7 perfect 10 scores and through the rest of her Olympic career. It is also very much a story about Bela Karolyi and his wife, Marta, and their coaching career in Romania.

Plot, Plot and Subplots

The main plot is the gymnastics life of Nadia. The second plot is about the Karolyis and their coaching career. There are numerous sub-plots to the story, having to do with federation politics, gymnasts’ family lives, gymnastics training and discipline. This is an excellent family movie and one all young gymnasts should watch.

Famous Gymnasts as actors in the Movie

Some well-known international gymnasts play big roles in this movie. US gymnast Marcia Frederick plays Nadia Comaneci and Emilia Eberle plays a gymnast as well. Choreographer, Geza Poszar, who also now lives in the United States, plays himself in the movie.

Definitely enjoying watching gymnastics movies over the Thanksgiving week-end with some friends and former gymnasts. We’re putting off starting to watch all the Christmas movies already all over TV.

I have been trying to get this film on DVD for so many years since I had it on Beta Max as a kid, but found it very expensive on Amazon and you need a DVD player that is universal. Watching this tonight and finding the website to allow it has brought back all my childhood memories as I watched this film over and over again as I was also a gymnast and very good and Nadia inspired me so much. I would love to get the film to watch at home but so far I am struggling. Thank you so so so much for allowing me to watch this again I have really enjoyed it.

Thank YouTube. I just search through their gymnastics videos and let people know which ones I like. Obviously we both like “Nadia.”

Why is this movie so expensive to buy??!!

It is out of print and not likely to be reprinted again because the gymnastics movie market is perceived of as too small. So it is only available from a small number of suppliers who either have used movies or somehow still have a new original on their shelves somewhere. In the Amazon used market, dealers sell their products (books, videos) from $.01 to as much as they can get. The law of supply and demand in action. Keep checking, because when the price gets too high (like this), more videos are often put into the market by sellers who originally thought they would keep their copy, but now are motivated by money and the price drops.
